#209 – Favourites of 2018 (not the best of 2018) – part one

Even though we sit here having played music from 390 releases this year, we feel a bit uneasy producing a ‘best of’ 2018 when there’s still so much great music we haven’t heard.

But from what we have heard there are so many highlights to cram into three shows of favourites. This first one gets us going with the blistering track from Sophie’s phenomenal Oil of Every Pearl’s Uninsides LP on Transgressive. Across the first ten tracks we take in a third play from the 700 Bliss cassette, Anna von Hausswolff’s sublime LP, middle eastern techno, Kenya glitches, a track from a ballet and a lot more.

Interview with Ninja Tune and Coldcut’s Jon More

A little two hour bonus to see you through the weekend – Gareth’s conversation with Ninja Tune co-founder and one half of Coldcut Jon More. Ninja Tune has released hundreds of records, with names on the roster including Roots Manuva, Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra, Young Fathers, and The Bug.

They talk about the foundation of Ninja Tune, the role of the label in the 21st century. The role of sub labels (including Big Dada, and Technicolor), their relationship with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder records, and play a lot of great music.
