We may kick off this week’s show with the delicate stylings of the ever-excellent Gruff Rhys and his new record, but we soon crack on with playing exceptional experimental contemporary electronics – from the sublime Gaika to Jamaican avant-dancehall specialists Equiknoxx. On this week’s journey we stop off to take in Wrongtom’s mindblowing remix of General Levy, experimental italo disco from Jolly Mare, Dutch-African punk from The Ex, new music from Leo Abrahams, Hieroglyphic Being, Jonny Sender, and some reissued South African funk via Cultures of Soul.

#90 – Portishead, Brandt Brauer Frick, GAIKA, Family Atlantica

There’s nothing like completely transforming an Abba track for your first music in six years, but that’s what Portishead have done with SOS. We’ve also got self-released sounds from Map71 and GAIKA, alongside two new ones being released by the on-form Soundway Records – the mesmerising Family Atlantica and the acid folk of Vanishing Twin. Elsewhere we have new jazz from Sarathy Korwar through Ninja Tune, Belgian duo Tav Exotic via Vlek, DVA on Hyperdub, Brandt Brauer Frick on !K7, and Newcastle’s phonetic swear-filter avoiders KHÜNNT.

#78 – Iggy Pop, Mikael Seifu, Gaika, She-Devils

Some extraordinary electronic music on this week’s show. JahYu’s rootsy dub with throat singing and bird noises ticks all our boxes, we’ve got two future British masters in Commodo and Rocks FOE combining, and another one in Gaika. It’s a real showcase of wonderful British electronics, with Not Waving, Champion, and Four Tet also appearing. Away from that we have the legendary Iggy Pop kicking things off, brilliant electronic pop with Montreal’s She-Devils, Italian drone from Fulkanelli and Ethiopian electronics from Mikael Seifu.
