Best of 2018

To close out 2018, here is our 3.5 hour best of 2018. The tracks from artists and releases we’ve loved through this fantastic year. In 2018 we have played over 400 unique independent artists, and this selection has just 30 of them.

#209 – Favourites of 2018 (not the best of 2018) – part one

Even though we sit here having played music from 390 releases this year, we feel a bit uneasy producing a ‘best of’ 2018 when there’s still so much great music we haven’t heard.

But from what we have heard there are so many highlights to cram into three shows of favourites. This first one gets us going with the blistering track from Sophie’s phenomenal Oil of Every Pearl’s Uninsides LP on Transgressive. Across the first ten tracks we take in a third play from the 700 Bliss cassette, Anna von Hausswolff’s sublime LP, middle eastern techno, Kenya glitches, a track from a ballet and a lot more.

This week we have a stunning selection of leftfield electronic music. Not only is there a new record from Aphex Twin, but stunning Mexican electronics from IntiNahual and the brilliant new record from Brandt Brauer Frick’s Daniel Brandt. We also have Anna Meredith’s rework of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a collaboration between Throwing Snow and Will Plowman under the Swaabi Maa moniker to celebrate the birthday of their A Future Without Records, and lots of good music from Portugal, Germany, Niger and beyond.

This week’s pod has Gareth and Anthony in fine fettle. Lengthy tracks from Sudanese tambour artist Abu Obaida Hassan, Earth legend Dylan Carlson, and London jazz staple Emanative punctuate a show full of dark doom, Estonian synth pop, blistering Lithuanian techno, crete experimentation, and a whole lot more.

A stunning selection this week, kicking off with the absolutely spectacular Congolese band KoKoKo!. We also have new music from the legendary Aphex Twin alongside new tunes from some of those he has undoubtedly inspired, such as Karen Gwyer. There’s deconstructed drum n bass from Pessimist, space music from Henge, digital dub from Roger Robinson, a beautiful, long piece from Man Forever, something from down under in the shape of Suburban Cracked Collective, thrash punk from Casual Sect, and the latest stunner from the Gqom Oh! label with TLC Fam.

So much good music this week that Gareth has tracks in reserve to cope with the fact that both of them picked the immense WaqWaq Kingdom record.
