To close out 2018, here is our 3.5 hour best of 2018. The tracks from artists and releases we’ve loved through this fantastic year. In 2018 we have played over 400 unique independent artists, and this selection has just 30 of them.

#210 – Favourites of 2018 (not the best of 2018) – part two

We continue our journey through the exceptional music we’ve enjoyed this year with another batch of music that’s worth looking back on. From the brilliant and silly Marie Davidson track ‘Work It’ through the exquisite sounds of Low and Cucina Povera, this is another cross-section of the stunning independent music released this year.

#186 – Jitwam, Low, Blawan, Lee Scratch Perry

A show that’s best described as ‘chill’ this week, as most of the music will have you woozy in the summer sun. Another description would be ‘symmetrical’ as it’s bookended by two dub tracks – the first from debutants Spiritual Rockers, and the final note from legend Lee Scratch Perry. In the middle we have a 14 minute opus from Low, electronic experimentation from Jako Maron on Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes, thundering techno from Blawan, cocaine pop from Jitwam and a whole lot more.

A stunning selection this week, kicking off with Colombia’s finest Meridian Brothers, we touch upon experimental pop of Circuit des Yeux, a fabulous collaboration between podcast favourites Hieroglyphic Being, Sarathy Korwar and Shabaka Hutchings, and the brutal punk of Lower Slaughter. We also have great new hiphop, jazz breaks, garage rock, and lost Somali tapes

Our last show before we take two weeks off for our summer holiday has jazz from Ireland alongside US psych from Moon Duo, garage from Howlin’ Banana Records’ Dusty Mush, the latest from Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes, the brilliant Stand High Patrol have a new track. We also have drone, electro, indie and a charity repress from Coil.

The same ten tracks but squeezed into 50 minutes this week – for some reason there are only two tracks north of five minutes. There’s more short, abrasive sounds this time, including the solo project of Mclusky and Future of the Left man Falko under his Christian Fitness moniker, as well as American rockers Pissed Jeans, and Mancunians ILL. There are two batches of Canadian synth-pop with Austra and YlangYlang, as well as Indian nu-disco edits from Breakplus, hiphop from Jeremiah Jae, bass much from Kahn & Neek and something indescribable by Èlg Independent Music Podcast
